Hello guys! How are you?
I was one of the first backers some time ago… but only now I have the time to put the device to the test. Could you please help me out?

I tried to follow some of the suggestions around the forum but didn’t get any results so far. The stepper motor is too slow to push the material. Do I have to make any changes at firmware level?

Right now there’s no way for the extruder to keep up with the x/y 35mm/s speed.

I just started with water! Looking forward to print the Nutella, Silicone, etc in the near future.

I have changed the M92 to 35,000 and saved to the eeprom with M500. But stepper motor is still sooo slow. Here’s my M503 settings:

Hi Enrique,

Apologies for the late reply. Yesterday was Canada Day. :slight_smile:

One detail that stands out to me in your notes is you are trying to print at a speed of 35 mm/s. Usually, the fastest we go is 20 mm/s, and I often print at 6-12 mm/s depending on the design I am trying to print.

For the “M92 Exxxx” command, that simply tells the stepper motor in the DIscov3ry how many steps to turn per mm. If you make this value too high, the stepper motor won’t like it and will make funny noises. The value for “xxxx” is typically 10x of what the value is for filament.

Note this is different than the extrusion speed (in Cura, this is the “Flow%” parameter).

Now, when you are using the Discov3ry, you have to begin by priming the nozzle. You have to build this pressure up slowly, so for a material like Nutella, it will take about 15 minutes for the material to travel through about 55 cm of tubing to reach the nozzle and begin exiting the nozzle. If you set the extrusion speed too high, you will compress the material faster than it is able to move, and that will put more stress on the cartridge, etc.

Once the material begins exiting the nozzle, keep extruding another 2-3 minutes. This builds up extra pressure so your first print layer won’t be too thin. (The extrusion speed during printing then continues to maintain this pressure in small increments.) So once the material has been exiting the nozzle for 2-3 minutes, stop the extrusion (or power cycle your printer), and select the file you wish to print (try 12 mm/s print speed to start with).

Thanks for the reply! Indeed… the flow / multiplier was what I really needed. Now it make sense … the extruding low speed and the 12mm/s print speed. =)
I tried to extrude some kind of nutella here but seems like the gear couldn’t handle the pressure. Is it normal? Where can I download the gear stl for a new print?

Do you see the gear turning, or is it not moving at all? It is normal for a little bit of wear on the gear as it settles in.

Also, another important note: do NOT do retraction. The Discov3ry is designed to put a lot of power in the extrude direction, but retraction will damage it. (The small amount of retraction that is found in the default settings of Cura, something like 5 mm, is fine, however.)
